time's sentinelPosted by Einion (Tri-Cities, United States) on 10 February 2010 in Landscape & Rural. Through year upon year this tree has stood watch upon this hillside, marking the passage of time, and waiting for a day that it alone knows; for it keeps its thoughts to itself. The hillside was a forest once, but that was long ago. Its brothers and sisters are gone now. There remain only heedless saplings and the old oak on the ridge, who is as old and silent as the stones. For as long as living memory reaches, this tree has stood alone. It stands quietly, keeping its secrets, and only the occasional whispering of branches hints that it is still awake; still watching; still waiting. In despite of the snow today I decided to post a warm picture, though it was ironically taken in the heart of December. Cell phone photo, unaltered.
